Proposal: Native Australian Bank Sync for Actual Budget via Redbark

Hi Team,Congrats on launching the Redbark REST API. This is a great step forward!I’m part of the Actual Budget community, and one gap we have is the lack of a built-in banking provider for Australian users. Actual has a strong open-source community, with 10M+ Docker pulls, which shows a good level of adoption and interest around the project. The current Redbark Actual sync project is also a great step, but it is still quite technical. Many users will not know how to set up Docker containers or run a separate sync service, especially those using hosted options like PikaPods, Fly.io, or similar services.Ideally, we would like to explore having a community-built Australian banking provider inside Actual Budget itself, powered by Redbark’s API, similar to the existing bank sync providers:https://actualbudget.org/docs/advanced/bank-sync The only challenge is pricing. We understand that Redbark relies on Fiskil and that CDR/Open Banking in Australia has real compliance and operating costs, so there may be restrictions outside Redbark’s control. However, the current pricing can feel a bit steep for many Actual users, considering this is a community-led open-source project. Would Redbark be open to an Actual Budget-specific subscription model, where the Actual community builds and maintains the native integration, and Redbark provides a lower-cost Actual-only subscription tier? This could be a good outcome for both sides: Australian Actual users get a built-in bank feed, and Redbark gets more adoption from users who would otherwise not use the current Docker-based sync setup. Not sure if this is the right place to share but one of my CBA accounts is refusing to sync via Redbark (and using simplefin). I get this error in the Actual logs: Error /simplefin/transactions Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'find') Not sure if that's an issue at the redbark end or Actual end. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

An integration for sync with Actual via Pikapods hosting would be fantastic. I appreciate Redbark's sync to Google Sheets as well, to create a searchable transaction history independent of Actual Budget. So, I would be happy paying full price for Redbark. Others may be encouraged with a lower tier fee.

For example, even a low-cost Actual-only tier at around A$4/month could become meaningful if adoption grows. If 5,000 Australian Actual (non-techie) users opted in over time, that would represent around A$240k/year in recurring revenue from a user base that may otherwise not use the current Docker-based Redbark sync setup (new revenue stream). Not to mention that many YNAB users have migrated to Actual Budget, so Redbark would stay app agnostic which aligns with your strategy.

Hey mate, this is in active development now. Working with the actual community to figure out a way to get this as native support. In the meantime, we're adding SimpleFIN protocol support, so adding Redbark should be simpler (I.E just adding a simple code, rather than running your own sync tool)

Hi Oscar, SimpleFIN with Actual works great and I plan to pull the trigger on a subscription before my trial expires. I did want to check if there's any plans to introduce a cheaper tier for only SF integration in the near future? In my use case I'm only using SF integration so I feel the developer pricing is a little steep. If the Saver Plan included SF that seems much more palatable.
